During the month of Ramadan the students at Hiram are invited to join the Muslim students in an all day fast every Thursday. I thought that it would be interesting, so I decided to do it. This being my first Ramadan fast, I was not completely sure what it entailed, and I had a bottle of water in the morning, after the sun already rose. Later I learned that when Muslims fast they abstain from both food and drink.
Then at sunset all the students who fasted are invited over to the chaplain's house at the edge of campus to "break fast" together. We had salad, pasta, bread, and this really good eggplant dish with tomatoes and cheese. I was somewhat relieved to find out that others had also decided to drink some water. After all, it was a hot day for September -- it reached around 85 this afternoon.
I'll have to do the fast again next week because it is a nice, reflective experience.
